I’ve never been to therapy before; I’m feeling anxious about coming. What should I expect from my first session?

It’s quite normal to feel this way.

In fact, I would be surprised if you’re counting down the hours to come meet me the first time. Relax!

Our first session would be an opportunity to get to know you better and talk about how our work together might be like. You can ask me questions, and I will also ask some of you. We can then agree on a working plan, like times to meet, what things you feel are important to work on, identify your strengths, and how to best use them to transform your current situation.

How many sessions do I need?

This is a common question, and the answers vary.

We’re all unique individuals that respond differently to life. As long as you’re addressing an important issue to you and getting value while doing it, it’s safe to say that you’re doing the right thing for you. The length of time that therapy can take to achieve your desired goals depends on your yearning for personal development, and your commitment to become a version of yourself that you are happy with.

My friend told me about a type of therapy called CBT that his therapist uses. Do you know about that? Would you use it on me?

CBT is very useful if you’re trying to change a behavior or change your thought about a certain way you behave in a situation. We would first have to decide what you’re in therapy for and assess if CBT is the right modality for you. You know that you’re unique. I would like to honor that in therapy and use the most appropriate modality for your needs.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

While medication could be very effective, and at times necessary, it alone cannot solve a problem at it’s root.

If your psychiatrist has prescribed medication for you, it’s generally believed that therapy along with medication produce better results. Our work together is designed to address the problems you’re experiencing and empower you through tapping into your strengths to accomplish your personal goals.
